MOD UPDATED with 10 new textures! Now the fur more realistic and voluminous!
This mod can be installed at any stage of the game and works with any number of playerβs horses (vanilla or from other mods).
Light body β is a mesh that I made based on vanilla horse with the same topology, so it works great with vanilla skeleton and animations.
Textures from this mod work ONLY with this mesh, because have unique UVs.
I combined the Imperial bridle with the Nordic saddle and slightly corrected the mesh, so the horse harness is also unique to this mod.
Light horses have unique characteristics of speed, stamina and health.
Light horses are located in a small stable in the Rorikstead (directly behind the Frostfruit Inn). Buying is possible through dialogue with Bob.
As in Oblivion, the slowest horse costs the least.
The last two breeds also have a slightly reduced amount of health.
The last two breeds also have a slightly reduced amount of health.
You can buy any of the horses as well as in the stables of Skyrim, but Bob will say βYou could if I had one. Sold my last available horse to someone that looked an awful lot like youβ only after buying Appaloosa. This does not mean you cannot buy other horses, but may be embarrass a little. If anyone knows how to fix this through the CK, I will gladly make these changes =)
Due to the inability to test the mod on other computers, please inform me of all errors, I’ll try to do my best! I will also be glad of any help and collaboration offers!

The most recent update simply corrected the file path for the optional saddle retexture, so it should now work properly.
Thanks to both madmodderjess & pvpgirl for bringing the need for these respective updates to my attention!
In many cases the horses will not be exactly the same as the ones in the above resources as I have mixed & matched coats with manes & tails according to my personal taste & vision for this mod.
Most horse textures are by Zira or Bellyache, some mane & tail textures are by Slof & Xazomn, the leather saddle is by Valachiim, the quilted saddles are by Bellyache, & all other saddle retextures are by Zira.
A huge thanks to sevencardz for providing information & resources that correct some vanilla bugs as well as allowing compatibility with the absolutely brilliant mod «Immersive Horses».
HORSE MANAGEMENT MODS
«Horses of Skyrim» may be used on its own, but I recommend the use of a horse managing mod to get the most out of your horses.
To use no horse manager you must choose an HSCH main file.
HSCH requires both the Hearthfire & Dawnguard official DLCs.
HSCH optionally retextures the vanilla horses, adds 25 uniquely coloured standalone mares, 4 standalone stallions, gives horses Old Norse names, retextures the vanilla tack & adds some new saddlery.
If you use the Retex file Frost will be white with a black & white «native» mane & tail, & Shadowmere will be a dim «shadowy» black. No other horses will have these colours.
There is also a file that will restore Arvak to a fully corporeal form after you have completed his quest & are able to summon him. With this file he will be a normal bareback horse with glowing blue eyes that give away his supernatural nature. He will be a unique flecked white with a pink muzzle.
The standalone horses are free to take at the players discretion & are located at city stables, in town paddocks or outside country inns (either hitched out the front or under shelters out the back). Some locations have had hitching posts, overhead shelters & piles of hay added.
Player horses are extremely hardy & can only be killed by the player. All horses are removed from the prey faction, they can’t be enchanted by spriggans, they will not effect your sneak bar & they won’t report your crimes.
Additionally the stamina & speed of all horses has been increased, but it will also take longer for their stamina to regenerate.
All standard horses have the same stats. The only difference is that mares will run to safety if threatened while dismounted whereas stallions will stand & fight.
To determine which HS horses are stallions refer to the ReadMe’s, additionally Frost, Shadowmere & Arvak are all stallions, as are any bareback Bethesda placed horses.
Frost, Shadowmere & Arvak all have higher stats than the standard horses.
If you use «Convenient Horses» your stat settings in the MCM menu will override the HS stats, giving any horse that you ride the same stats as each other & making them all either fight or flee when threatened while dismounted.
With «Convenient Horses» you will be able to saddle your horse with either the tack it was originally wearing, any of the vanilla saddlery, or completely bareback. Without CH you can only use the tack a horse is initially equipped with.
The Imperial saddle has been given a clean brown retexture & the Dark Brotherhood saddle has been given a true black & deep red retexture. Additionally there are optional files that will allow you to give either of these saddles the plain black texture from the screenshots.
The saddlery them is Nordic & most horses will have the fur tack, however some NPC horses, the HS stallions, Frost & the Hearthfire horses will have a higher class leather version (Shadowmere will still have the Dark Brotherhood saddlery).
If you dislike the vanilla fur tack & would like to actually RETEXTURE it with the leather version please go to www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/35524 & install Valachiim’s original retexture mod.
HSCH COLOURS & NAMES
Please click on the images tab on the top of this page to get an idea which horse colours you will find in each location.
A complete list of names & colours can be found in the ReadMe on this page, & will also be listed in the HSCH ReadMe included with your mod file download.
All HSCH files are compatible with «Convenient Horses».
ONE of the HSCH mod files from the Main File section must be used as they include all the base mod content.
Vanilla files do not retexture the vanilla horses, although they do change which colour is located at each stable to make the horses look more indigenous to the area they are in.
Retex files give the vanilla horses HS colours, including Frost & Shadowmere.
If you want to use external mods to retexture the vanilla horses you MUST use Vanilla files.
HSCH RetexDG is identical to HSCH Retex except it also retextures Arvak.
HS BlackIC retextures the Imperial/Cyrodilic tack with a plain black texture.
HSCH INSTALLATION & LOAD ORDER
* Install before starting a new game, OR
* At a point in your game that you are completely happy with your progress go to an interior cell, save, then exit the game
* Make & keep a back up copy of the save you just made, as well as your current mod folder if you are updating
* Install & activate your HSCH mod file
* Optionally install & activate your chosen patches & retexture files
* I recommend using LOOT to sort your load order, manually moving any HS files if it places them incorrectly
* In game load your interior save, save again, play from this new save
If you use «Convenient Horses» it should be above «Horses of Skyrim» in your load order.
If you use a patch it should be below «Horses of Skyrim» in your load order.
HSIH is for use with «Immersive Horses» & will not function properly without it.
HSIH does not retexture the vanilla horses & is designed to be used with the Primitive Horse Breed version of «Immersive Horses». However you can run it with the Non Retexture version of IH & either keep the vanilla horse textures or use another external mod to retexture them.
«Horses of Skyrim» adds 25 uniquely coloured standalone mares, 4 standalone stallions, gives horses Old Norse names, retextures the vanilla saddles & adds 13 sets of new tack.
For maximum player choice in if/when/how the standalone horses are obtained they automatically belong to the player faction & are free to take.
As the colours of wild animals have evolved to match their environment I have attempted to do the same with the horses, choosing horse colours that look indigenous to the region that they are placed in.
Horses are located at city stables, in town paddocks or outside country inns (either hitched out the front or under shelters out the back). Some locations have had hitching posts, overhead shelters & piles of hay added.
HS Standalone Mare Default Stats
* Level 10
* Height 1
* Speed 100
* Stamina 600
* Health 500
* Unaggressive & cowardly
* Protected
* Removed from the prey faction
* Can not be enchanted by spriggans
* Will not report crimes
HS Standalone Stallion Default Stats
* Level 15
* Height 1 (or 1.06 if an ini file is used)
* Speed 105
* Stamina 800
* Health 750
* Unaggressive & cautious
* Protected
* Removed from the prey faction
* Can not be enchanted by spriggans
* Will not report crimes
IH must be placed below HS in your load order for all the IH features to work as intended. This means that there will be some inconsistencies between vanilla & HS horses. I am prepared to make another patch that addresses this if requested, I removed it as it isn’t necessary & IH is being fairy regularly updated.
There are 13 new saddles added with the HSIH files. You will also find that the Imperial saddle is now clean brown leather & the Dark Brotherhood saddle is deep black & red.
Tack is not overly easy to obtain. HS standalone horses will all begin bareback, & vanilla horses will initially be equipped with the basic fur or Imperial/Cyrodilic saddlery.
All tack variants can be crafted at a forge (providing you have the steel smithing perk) & all but the Dark Brotherhood saddlery can be purchased from blacksmiths (although less common varieties will only appear occasionally). You can then use IH features to equip any tack in your inventory on your horses.
You will always be able to purchase basic fur, Imperial/Cyrodilic & light (off-white) quilted tack. There will be a 75% chance of black & coloured quilted variants appearing, a 50% chance of leather & fine, & a 25% chance of noble.
Crafting recipes will only appear if you have the book «Saddlery in Skyrim» in your inventory, which will always be available for purchase from blacksmiths.
HSIH HORSE COLOURS & NAMES
Please click on the images tab on the top of this page to get an idea which horse colours you will find in each location.
A complete list of names & colours can be found in the ReadMe on this page, & will also be listed in the HSIH ReadMe included with your mod file download.
HSIH is the «Horses of Skyrim» main file for use alongside «Immersive Horses». It is the essential file with all the «Horses of Skyrim» base content.
«Immersive Horses» must be placed below HSIH in your load order or you will not be able to adopt unowned or stolen horses.
With the exception of mods that only include texture replacers I do not recommend uninstalling any mod in an existing game unless you can revert back to a save that was made before installing it.
If you follow my installation guidelines you will be able to do this!

Immersive Horses is a lightweight overhaul for the horses in Skyrim built on SKSE64 and SkyUI SE. The goal of Immersive Horses is to improve on nearly every aspect of Skyrim’s horses while remaining as true as possible to the original game. Immersive Horses adds a range of new commands and related options for horses as well as an integrated ownership and follower system designed specifically for horses.
It is now possible to buy, steal, or adopt just about any horse from vanilla Skyrim. Horses you buy at the stables and unique horses you find in quests can be owned permanently once you claim them. Many horses in the game are temporary encounters which means they can not be owned unless they are made permanent through adoption. Horses from other mods can only be owned temporarily unless special changes are made to those mods to allow permanent compatibility with Immersive Horses. Please note that horses added to the game by other mods may not be adoptable.
Any horse that you acquire permanently on your travels is automatically added to your herd. Horses in your herd can be managed and summoned from almost anywhere in the game, including other worldspaces from other mods. If you find or steal a temporary horse and you want to keep it then you must first ride the horse to a suitably different location and then dismount it there to gain ownership. You can not wait, fast travel, or use any other horse options while you are mounted on a stolen horse. Once claimed, use the horse menu or horse ownership power to adopt the horse and make the current location its new home which allows you to keep the horse permanently. Choose wisely as this can only be done once per horse.
Activating a horse you own while you are standing, sneaking, or mounted will display an options menu by default but any of these actions can be changed in the Mod Configuration Menu (MCM), along with optional hotkeys for various horse commands. Options in the MCM include the ability to protect your horses from death, force your horses to ignore combat, have your horses wait when dismounted, and so on.
Basic commands for all horses:
Commands for horses you own:
Commands for your entire herd:
Lesser powers related to horses (optional):
Horses with different colors or markings are recognized as different breeds and each breen is given distinct strengths and weaknesses. Efforts were made to balance stats evenly and to assign stats to horses that seemed most appropriate. Various stats for each breed or unique horse can be changed in the Immersive Horses.json file.
When installing Immersive Horses you are given the option to include KrittaKitty’s beautiful horse textures from Realistic Primitive Horse Breeds (used with permission). The retexture applies to all of the regular and unique horses from the vanilla game and comes highly recommended.
Frost is descended from supernatural horses and is of the best breeding stock in Skyrim but in vanilla all he gets is a health and stamina boost. Come on now, Bethesda. Frost has been made completely immune to the stuff he’s named after and he can now run faster and gallop longer and farther than any other horse in Skyrim. He’s also not too bad at defending himself.
Shadowmere is a supernatural horse so he should be a significant upgrade to a regular horse. Shadowmere is now a bit faster and has more stamina than other horses. He’s also still quite aggressive and has plenty of health and stamina to tank effectively.
Arvak is an undead horse so it doesn’t make much sense for him to get tired. Now he never will. If you have Dawnguard installed, this pile of bones will go full Energizer Bunny and just keep going and going and going and going.
Horses are too slow in vanilla and they don’t have large stamina reserves like you’d expect a horse to have but they do have ridiculously high stamina regeneration. This limits you to canter and gallop as the only practical gaits to use while riding and the gallop is too slow and doesn’t last long enough due to the low stamina. Immersive Horses are able to gallop faster and much farther than vanilla horses but they will also need to rest for a reasonable period of time before they can do it again. Horse speed and gait progression have been meticulously tweaked and balanced to allow for more fluid and natural horse movement (especially with a gamepad/controller). Keyboard users can finally trot with their horses by mapping a hotkey in the MCM which can then be used to toggle between walking/trotting and trotting/cantering.
Horses are pretty useless in vanilla and you’re limited to using only one at a time. Vanilla horses are also too weak and they don’t have any mounted special attacks. Immersive Horses expands horse abilities significantly and adds in a variety of new equine ways to attack your enemies.
Fast dismounts are now possible to the left side, right side, or rear of the horse and they can be assigned to three different hotkeys in the MCM. Executing a fast dismount will make your character jump off the horse immediately and also draw any equipped weapons on the way down, if that option is enabled. The normal dismount also happens significantly faster and the zoom effect was removed.
Casting spells while mounted is now possible and it works well in many situations but there are certain drawbacks to be aware of.
If you want a different saddle for your horse then you will need a mod like Craftable Horse Barding. Once installed, various new saddles and armours for your equines can be crafted or purchased from the stable masters around Skyrim. Simply add your newly purchased or crafted item to your horse’s inventory and your horse will equip it and wear it just like a follower would.
Various tweaks and fixes to horses have also been made. All relevant changes from the Unofficial Patches are included.
Your followers can ride any horses you give them ownership of but only if you have a follower mod installed that supports the feature. Immersive Horses intentionally limits itself to only managing horses and horse ownership in order to maintain maximum compatibility with the various follower mods. The direct management of non-horse followers is out of scope for this mod.
The following mods are known to add the ability for followers to ride horses:
Immersive Horses requires the following:
Test Immersive Horses with your load order:
1. Launch Skyrim with Immersive Horses installed.
2. At the main menu, open the console (
) and enter these commands:
player.additem f 10000
coc whiterunstables
3. The game should load you in as the default nord character in the house at Whiterun stables.
4. Exit the house and buy the black horse from Skulvar at the stables.
5. Mount the horse to gain ownership.
6. Test that the horse will follow/wait/dismiss on command.
7. Ride the horse North and find the skooma bandit hideout behind Dragonsreach.
8. Dismount and steal the black horse.
9. Ride the stolen horse to a nearby farm and dismount it to gain ownership.
10. Use the horse menu or horse ownership power to adopt the stolen horse.
11. Summon both horses and change/remove their saddles.
12. Fast travel to another major hold and both horses should appear near you.
13. Verify the horses have the same saddles and retain the same items in their inventories.
14. Kill the horse you bought and return to Whiterun to verify the horse respawns.
Q: My horse won’t follow or wait for me or just walks away. What’s the problem?
A: Most likely, you have another mod or quest overriding the AI packages for that horse in your game. For example, you might have another horse mod that adds horses to the game which have their own AI packages so changes may need to be made to that mod for full compatibility with Immersive Horses. Also be sure to test horses on a brand new save game to make sure the issues you are facing are not being caused by your current save game.
Q: How can I customize stats for a unique horse or breed?
A: Certain stats for each of the horse breeds can be customized by editing the SKSE\Plugins\Immersive Horses\Horse Breeds.json file.
Q: How script intensive is this mod?
A: Immersive Horses was designed to be as light and efficient as the Papyrus scripting language will allow and no intensive tasks are involved in its operation. Animation event listeners are used only when necessary and scripts are applied to horses at the race level, rather than running a constant update loop on the player via a cloaked magic effect or similar solution. Basic game engine functionality was utilized wherever possible.
How to make unique horses from other mods compatible:
1. First, open or create a new horse actor in TES5Edit or the Creation Kit. The simplest method is to copy an existing horse actor and reuse one of the existing horse breeds for your horse, so choose one of the vanilla actor templates (EncHorseSaddledBlack, EncHorseSaddledBrown, etc.) as the template for your horse and tick the ‘Use Traits’ box in the ‘Template Data’ section. This step allows Immersive Horses to magically (BY THE POWER OF SKSE) retrieve the form name of the template from Immersive Horses.esp (Fell Pony, Haflinger Horse, etc.) and then load the breed stats from the Immersive Horses.json file based on that name.
2. Next, add the horse to the ‘PotentialFollowerFaction’ and be sure to UNCHECK ‘Respawn’ and CHECK ‘Unique’ on the horse actor. This step will make it safe for Immersive Horses to give the player access to the horse’s inventory and for the player to claim the horse. While you’re there, check ‘does not effect stealth meter’ as well so the horse won’t spot you when you’re sneaking.
3. Duplicate and rename the AI packages from Immersive Horses into your mod to avoid needing to add Immersive Horses.esp as a master. Remove the ‘IHO’ prefix and replace it with a prefix for your mod and simply add these AI packages to your horse, then UNCHECK ‘Use AI Packages’ in the ‘Template Data’ section. This step gives the player the ability to command the horse to follow, wait, dismiss, etc.
4. If the horse is NOT marked essential and you want it to respawn when it dies, then add a custom death respawn script to the horse similar to IHOActorDeathRespawnScript (copy, paste, rename). Alternatively, if the horse has a stables quest (so it can be purchased) then add the PlayerHorseScript to the alias for the horse in the stables quest which effectively does the same thing. Remove any AI packages from the horse alias in the stables quest so the AI packages on the horse will prevail. This step is necessary because checking the ‘Respawn’ box will respawn the horse even if it isn’t dead, which will annoyingly clear its inventory, actor values, factions, etc., whenever it unloads from a cell.
